The Light Brigade

... No, not THAT Light Brigade.

The 1704 Astrovian Light Brigade... a more rascally bunch of ne'er-do-wells you couldn't wish to meet.

Here's the latest addition to the project: The Swarovski Uhlans. These are irregular lancers from the fringes of the Astrovian Empire; from the wild hills and forests of Transvladachia.

And the commander of the Astrovian Light Cavalry Brigade: von Trapp (a man you wouldn't want to escape to Switzerland with, I can tell you!)

Here is the whole brigade... the Uhlans accompanied by the Czardas Hussars.

For these figures, I decided that I would speed paint them and only do two layers (no final highlight). I think they probably could have done with a further highlight on the red cloaks, but overall, they look pretty ok...

  1. Hills ( and forests) are alive with the sound of Light troops!
Great figures Phil and, on the subject of hills, I really liked your scenery in the previous post.

    1. Thx Peter. I kept to a limited palette for the painting. Sometimes that works even for irregulars.

    1. Thx Stokes. Not a mega-sized unit, but a feeling of satisfaction when finished, as always.

  4. Speaking of 'that' light brigade, the 17th Lancers and 11th Hussars are two of my personal faves. The 4th Light Dragoons ain't too shabby either although a bit too somber in appearance for my more garish 80s sensibilities.

    1. I always liked the idea of the 8th Hussars, Stokes (the 'cherrybums') with their red breeches. I believe there was a Trooper Olley at 'the charge'... possibly a 4th Dragoon. More ancestry work to do!

    1. Thx Graham. Funny you should say that... I do feel 'at home' in the 18C, and I am very much enjoying this particular bit of it!

  6. Wonderful looking group of rascally naer do wells. That von Trapp family sure gets around. One of them is the inhaber of one of my Imperium (Austrian) SYW regiments.

    1. Thx Paul. Not the mega-sized units of the Grimsby club for this period, but you will notice a few Front Rank figures on Hinchliffe horses in there... inspiration from you!

  9. Phil,
Thanks for that posting as I was not familiar with the unit and I'm a big fan of the period. Great looking figures.

  10. Happy New Year, Phil! Great to see you back in the 18th Century with such a colourful and characterful unit!

I see Schwartznetter has escaped the VFS (or rather, this is his rascally ancestor who later changed his name :-D ) to command this unit...it is such a wonderful sculpt to command units of "less than reputable character, and you have done it proud. I look forward to reading more of this unit's dastardly deeds...or is that deeds of derring-do!! ?

    Best wishes, Rohan.

    1. Thx Rohan. That Hussar command figure is a great character and lovely to paint. The old Schwarzenatter figure you refer to was in command of some pandours I seem to remember. They were sold one a few years ago. This chap is more at home with his mounted fellow. Best rgds. Phil

  11. Such beautiful looking units. Those pennants really add to them and I'd swear that they are moving—a brilliant effect.
