Inspiration or Distraction?

The other day, the following  DVDs dropped through the letter box here at Warcabinet HQ...

Their arrival was by no means a surprise, as I had ordered them in time for my birthday (any other readers occasionally buy themselves a birthday treat or two? No? Just me then!!). However, whilst no surprise, their arrival was met with a degree of unconcealed joy!

The 1864 series, I completely missed on TV, but thought it worth a boxed set punt.
Alatriste, I have been aware of for ages, and it had spent a long time in the "must get that some day" category.

The question is, which one to watch first?!

Can anyone comment/ recommend/ shed light on these?

  1. Hi Phil - definitely not on your own for self-acquired birthday presents!

Alatriste is brilliant! Have not watched 1864 or heard much about it to be honest but Viggo Mortenson is very, very good.

Mmmm...only four months until my birthday...

  2. Alatriste, as I found watching 1864 on television a bit of a trial. I will be interested in what you make of it...

  4. I enjoyed both, as they give a very good impression of battle and of soldiering in their period. I recommend Alatriste first.

  7. Happy Birthday Phil. You are not alone in self buying. While my family are very good getting me the wargaming treats that I ask for I sometimes have a self-bought backup, just in case! Couldn't get on with the first episode of 1864 so did not pursue it except to dip into the main battle episode to see what the fuss was about, trouble was, not having followed it I didn't care about the characters nor the outcome......

  8. Very encouraging to hear that Danish TV productions and Danish movie stars are held in such regard in your DVD collection. I grew up about an hrs drive from Dybbøl, so naturally I watched 1864 when it came out last year. Its the largest TV production in Danish history ever, and a very good portrait of a focal point in our history. I really like the way it connects our past history with our present day society and the involvement in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan mixing in all the questions about integration that we face in the EU. I'm actually thinking that it might be an idea to do a range of 28mm Danes for this period. What do you think Phil?

  9. Very interesting comments, and I think Alatriste will just win by a nose in terms of which I watch first... Probably this coming weekend.
As for 1864, an intriguing analysis Mr Black Powder, and I'll watch with interest when I get to it. And a range of 1864 Danes..? Hmm, well, I'm sure now would be the time for such a launch, if the TV programme has created an interest in the period.
Oh, and thank you for the birthday wishes everyone ... the years are going faster, policemen are getting younger, and the youth of today... Well, tut, they really don't know how good they've got it. See I'm becoming a curmudgeon. What do you mean "becoming?!"
